12.23.2006   SEASONAL GREETING FROM GLOBAL SATELLITE As we approach the end of the year, and as many of us prepare for the Christmas and New Year holiday season, we would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your continued freindship and support.
Inmarsat & Iridium services made a real difference to many thousands of people around the world in 2006, helping  governments interact with their citizens,   businesses thrive in areas without a terrestrial network and individuals to remain in contact with their families & freinds from isolated parts of the globe.
For others, access to communications was life changing - the seafarers who relied on the GMDSS for their rescue, for instance, or the victims of disaster helped by government and private organisations.
Our goal as always been to provide  the best possible advice and support for our products and services.
None of this would be possible without the valued freindship and support of our clients, distribution partners, service providers, partners, suppliers and many others within the mobile satellite community.
We would like to take this oppurtunity to  wish all of you and your familites a healthy, successful and safe 2007.

8.4.2006   THURAYA SATELLITE NETWORK Latest news on the malfunction:

Due to an external source of interference, the Thuraya Network is experiencing temporary malfunctions in certain services.

The interference is affecting an extensive coverage of the Thuraya network but with concentration mainly in Africa. The source of the problem has been identified but Thuraya has not been able to find a solution. At the moment, Thuraya’s top management and CEO are working extensively to try and resolve this issue.

Thuraya have assured us that the problem will be eradicated as soon as possible but in the mean time this external source of interference is still affecting not only the Thuraya network but also other satellite systems and as such should be fixed soon.

Everyone’s Thuraya phones are experiencing the same problems.

NOTE To this date we have not been notified of any difficulties or faults with the INMARSAT and the IRIDIUM networks.

1.8.2006   PLANNED INMARSAT SERVICE OUTAGES Today Inmarsat announced there will be an Inmarsat A service outage at 14:00 UTC on Sunday 8 January 2006.  The outage will occur as part of a planned transition whereby Inmarsat A service in the AOR West region is being moved to the 2nd generation satellite, Inmarsat2-F2 at 98 West, designated as the PAC-E region.  The outage is expected to last approximately 10 minutes.

To minimize service interruption, Inmarsat A users in the AOR West will be required to repoint their antenna to either AOR East @ 15 degrees West or to the new service PAC East @ 98 degrees West.  Users may switch to the AOR East at any time; however users of the PAC East will need to repoint their antenna on or after the 14:00 UTC time of service transition.  Only TDM channel 0 will be operational.  Some users may need to manually select TDM channel 0 in addition to repointing their antenna.  For more information about how to repoint an Inmarsat A antenna, see the attached instruction sheet.

The outage Sunday is the first of two outages scheduled by Inmarsat.  The second will occur on 15 January 2006 at 11:00 UTC and will affect the following range of Inmarsat services available in the AOR West:  Inmarsat C / M / B / R (Aero) / E / D / D+ / Mini-M / GAN / Fleet / Swift as well as MPDS, Lease services, Omnistar and Intelsat General (SCADA).  More information about this outage will be distributed by GLOBAL SATELLITE in the days ahead.

7.28.2005   End of R-BGAN Service on the Thuraya Satellite The R-BGAN service will cease over the Thuraya satellite at 1800UTC on Sunday 31 July 2005.

This means that from 31 July onwards users who have not yet migrated onto the Inmarsat-4 satellite will no longer be able to access the R-BGAN service. If you are in a remote location and do not have the required software upgrade, you will no longer be able to download the software, and will therefore suffer a complete loss of service.

We therefore urge you to take whatever action is necessary to migrate onto I-4.

As a reminder, the migration is a three-step process:

1. Download and install the new software (available from www.regionalbgan.inmarsat.com/upgrade along with further details)

2. Turn the switch on the R-BGAN antenna to 'R'

3. Re-point the antenna.

7.26.2005   Globalstar Opens Satellite Gateway In Sebring Milpitas CA (SPX) Jul 15, 2005 Globalstar announced Thursday enhanced service coverage in Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean with the opening of a new Globalstar gateway in Sebring, Florida.

The Federal Communications Commission has approved the operation of a new Globalstar gateway to ensure that enhanced service and coverage would be available with hurricane season approaching earlier than usual this year.

Globalstar expects the gateway to begin operation later today, immediately providing expanded satellite coverage in the Southeastern United States and the Caribbean.

"The opening of the Sebring Gateway is a major milestone for Globalstar and represents a significant commitment to continuously improving service and coverage for our maritime business, recreational and emergency response customers who rely on satellite communications in that region of our North American service area," said Jay Monroe, CEO and Chairman of Globalstar.

"Further, the opening represents another step in Globalstar's effort to continually upgrade our network infrastructure to accommodate a growing number of subscribers and support new applications that use Globalstar voice and data services."

The Sebring Gateway, the company's first newly constructed gateway since 2004, was originally expected to be fully operational August 1.

However, with hurricane season approaching earlier than usual this year, work was accelerated and the FCC application process was accelerated to ensure that enhanced service and coverage would be available in Florida, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.

The FCC used its power to grant a special temporary authority to enable Globalstar to operate the gateway while the FCC processes Globalstar's application to operate the facility permanently.

Globalstar has a solid track record with county, state and federal agencies involved in disaster relief, emergency response and law enforcement.

Last year, response teams used Globalstar satellite handsets to coordinate relief efforts following the aftermath of the hurricanes which hit the Florida region. Agencies such as FEMA have been long-standing users of Globalstar, in order to provide emergency communications service during incidents around the country.

While contingency communications applications are an immediate need, Globalstar originally conceived the Sebring gateway to serve a burgeoning number of users in the region.

"The need is immediate, not only for emergency communications, but for our customers who regularly use Globalstar voice and data services," added Monroe.

"Some of our most prolific users are in the Caribbean and surrounding areas, including recreational boaters, oil & gas companies and other industrial users. Growth among these segments continues to exceed our expectations, and we focus our efforts to maintain our service at levels our customers have come to expect."

7.22.2005   GARMIN moves to SOLID-STATE MEMORY For your information, GARMIN is now using solid state memory rather than hard drives in all units except for the StreetPilot 2620.

The solid state memory is much more robust than hard drives and therefore is more appropriate for motocycle use.

Our memory can be accessed at very low temperatures whereas the hard drives used by Tom Tom, Magellan and others will not work if the temperature is below freezing.

Likewise our memory can withstand much more shock and vibration than a hard drive. Therefore our customers will find that our systems should be much more reliable than the competition.

6.25.2005   9505A SOFTWARE UPDATES We have been advised by the manufacturer that the new software version to resolve the battery and time/date bugs in the 9505A software is currently being tested and should be released by the end of JUNE 2005.

The new software will be posted on our web-site as soon as it is released.

In the meantime, DO NOT SET THE TIME & THE DATE ON THE 9505A satellite phone, as this could cause the programme to freeze.

Once again we would like to apologise for any inconvenience that this may have caused.

6.2.2005   Extension of the Waiver of the Activation fee on African prepaid SIMs As a result of the success of this promotion, the $100 activation fee for African prepaid SIMs will continue to be waived until 31-December-2005.

The combination of no activation fee and the low per minute price of the African prepaid SIM assures Iridium’s continued competitiveness in Africa.

Previously this waiver had been scheduled to end on 01-June-2005.
5.26.2005   RBGAN and the New Inmarsat I4 satellite. Please see http://www.globalsatellite.us/en/inmarsatrbgan.aspx?Nav_ID=216 for information on the new RBGAN coverage after the switch to Inmarsat I4 Satellite.

We are approaching one of the most significant moments in the life of the new Inmarsat-4 F1 satellite, positioned over the Indian Ocean Region at 64º East. After successfully completing a complex series of tests and maneuvers, Inmarsat is now ready to transition their existing and evolved services from the Inmarsat-3 satellite onto the Inmarsat-4 in the IOR.

THE TRANSITION WILL HAPPEN AT 2000 UTC (9PM LOCAL) ON SATURDAY 28TH MAY 2005.

For RBGAN user tt is very important to upgrade the RBGAN software to version 8.5.2.2 July the 8TH 2005 in order to avoid interuption of services.

Regional BGAN users must follow the following three-step process to ensure service continuity.

Please consult GLOBAL SATELLITE or visit http://regionalbgan.inmarsat.com/latest for information on coverage details. If you have any questions about the transition of services from the Inmarsat-3 to Inmarsat-4 satellite in the IOR, please contact your GLOBAL SATELLITE Account Manager.

5.19.2005   RBGAN to switch to new satellite mid 2005 Regional BGAN users, will soon come to enjoy significant benefits with Inmarsat's next generation satellites (I-4) - the largest and most powerful communications satellites ever built - the first of which was launched in March 2005.

When the Regional BGAN service is transitioned onto the first I-4 satellite, (currently planned for mid 2005), users will enjoy service continuity and extended geographic coverage so please ensure you are familiar with the steps needed to be taken by contacting GLOBAL SATELLITE customer service.

5.5.2005   Update on Battery Power Enhancement for 9505A Satellite Phone ]The new version of firmware for the 9505A handset, developed to enhance the accuracy of the 9505A satellite phone battery charge level indicator, is now in final regression test phase. We are confident that this software will successfully complete testing by the end of this week and then be made available to our clients.

This new version, identified as IS05003, will more accurately depict the level of energy currently stored in the battery and eliminate the ‘Invalid Battery’ state that has occurred with some batteries.

The 9505A handsets that have this software problem must be returned to Global Satellite to be re-flashed.

Global Satellite regrets any inconvenience caused by this situation and will make maximum effort to correct this.

4.28.2005   Battery Information-Update to Alert (4-13-05)
"IRIDIUM 9505A users may experience problems with their batteries"
The upcoming software release by 1st of May will fix both the battery meter inaccuracy and the "Invalid Battery" state situation.
In the mean time, you can prevent your battery from getting into an "Invalid Battery" state by following these simple steps:
Use your phone as normal.

  • Ignore the battery meter display and the "Low Battery" message.
  • Do not charge the battery until the battery is completely discharged, indicated by the phone shutting down on its own.  Leave the phone on when not making calls will help discharge the battery.
  • Once the battery is completely discharged, charge the battery by connecting a charger to the phone for at least 4 hours if possible. This complete discharge/charge cycle will reset the battery meter accuracy.
  • Until the new software is installed on the phone, performing the discharge/charge cycle once a month will ensure battery meter accuracy and prevent the battery from getting into an "Invalid Battery" state. Any battery that currently exhibits either "Low Battery" or "Invalid Battery" will be fully operational once it is used with the new SW release.

3.23.2005   Iridium To Deploy Push-To-Talk Service Iridium Satellite LLC announced plans to deploy a group call push-to-talk voice and data service. The new service will allow for deployment of multi-user communication "nets" from Iridium mobile satphones from anywhere worldwide. The service is designed for public and private sector first responders and is ideal for crisis applications where rapid deployment, reliability and security are key, the company said. The group call push-to-talk communications service will allow one user to talk or transmit data to many users simultaneously. Dispatch centers will be able to set up multi-user communication nets on Iridium satellite channels. The service will be scalable to meet user requirements. It will enable over-the-air group management where dispatch centers can add users to groups as needed. In addition, users will be able to access voice and data communications at the same time when immediate access to critical systems and information from any location is required.

The service will incorporate end-to-end encryption to ensure secure communications. Iridium users desiring this service will be able to upgrade their Iridium 9505 and 9505A satphones with new broadcast/group software and a small push-to-talk ancillary device. When not operating in a group call mode, the handsets will function normally in the traditional phone-to-phone mode.

"The Iridium group call push-to-talk communications service will be able to link three, four, a dozen or even hundreds of users together into an effective network," said Iridium Executive Vice President Greg Ewert in a prepared statement. "This Iridium service will offer the virtual equivalent of repeater stations in space. The need to position a repeater station on a mountaintop or a tall - and vulnerable - structure will no longer exist."

Iridium expects to achieve initial deployment for Department of Defense users by the fourth quarter 2005. Iridium will launch to homeland security and commercial customers in 2006, focusing on public safety, border patrol, customs, forestry, oil and gas, fishing and mining applications. Iridium anticipates needs in the area of command and control, logistics, support, position reporting, observation and other critical information relay beyond line-of-sight.

3.11.2005   ILS Atlas V Vehicle Lifts Massive Satellite For Inmarsat CAPE CANAVERAL AIR FORCE STATION,
    Fla., March 11, 2005 –

An Atlas V launch vehicle carried its largest payload to date into orbit tonight, the Inmarsat 4-F1 satellite that weighs nearly 6 metric tons (5,959 kgs/13,138 pounds). This also marked the third launch of the year for International Launch Services (ILS).

3.10.2005    Inmarsat Poised To Launch Satellite For Wireless Broadband Network By Antone Gonsalves Courtesy of TechWeb News

Inmarsat Group Ltd. on Thursday prepared to launch the first of three satellites that will make up the company's Internet-based, high-speed wireless network for people working in remote places around the world.

The London-based company, which started a quarter century ago providing voice communications to ships at sea, planned to launch the Inmarsat 4-F1 satellite from Cape Canaveral in Florida at 4:42 p.m. Eastern time.

"At the moment, there's less than a 20 percent chance for a weather hold up, which is about as good as it gets," company spokesman Chris McLaughlin said from Cape Canaveral. "We're delighted."

The I 4-F1 is part of a $1.5 billion investment the satellite operator is making in building a global broadband network that is expected to be used primarily by governments, military, relief organizations and news agencies.

At six tons, the I 4-F1 is believed to be the heaviest commercial satellite ever launched, McLaughlin said. An Atlas V rocket with three solid-fuel boosters will carry the satellite into space, where it will provide data services up to 432KB per second to Asia, Africa and Europe. The second satellite, scheduled for launch later this year, will server North America, and the third satellite has been designated as a ground spare. It could, however, be launched in 2006, if the company finds that it's needed to handle network traffic. The network is based on the Internet protocol.

Inmarsat currently provides data services through a nine-satellite fleet using older technology that delivers from 56KB per second to a maximum of 128KB per second. The new satellites are expected to be 20 times more powerful than the older technology, McLaughlin said.

"Data services, which accounted for 15 percent of the closely held company's revenue five years ago, makes up 70 percent of the company's revenue today, McLaughlin said.

"(Moving to an IP network) represents a logical progression for Inmarsat," McLaughlin said. "We're moving with our customers, and following their needs."

Inmarsat sells its service through resellers. To access the IP network, users would need to plug a laptop or other device into a BGAN modem for high-speed data. BGAN stands for broadband global area network.

The IP modem, which is about the size of a laptop, must be pointed to the satellite in order to connect to the network. The device, which sells for between $500 and a $1,000, includes visual and sound software tools for making the connection. Users pay resellers separately for airtime.

About 350,000 terminals have been sold for connecting to Inmarsat's older network, McLaughlin said. Users of the devices today include the U.S. Navy, relief organizations at the tsunami disaster in South Asia and the U.S. military in Afghanistan. The service also is used by news agencies covering events in countries with poor telecommunications.
